Little Wickets offers fun, indoor cricket classes that build “Big Kid Skills” like confidence and teamwork through play.

If you’ve ever watched your toddler and thought, “Are they ever going to sit still?” or “I wish they’d just join in,” please know you’re in good company. We’ve all been there. Parenting is a bit of a wild ride, and every child shows up differently at different times – sometimes they are raring to go, sometimes they are a bit more “cautious observers,” and some are just plain full of beans all the time.

That’s actually why Little Wickets exists. It was started over 15 years ago by parents who wanted something more than just a sports class. We wanted a place that “got it”- where the focus isn’t on being the next cricket star, but on the small, real wins that happen when kids feel comfortable enough to just be themselves.

We Get It: Every Kid is Different

A young child laughing while playing a fun indoor cricket game at Little Wickets cricket classes for toddlers & kids, showing how they learn through play.Every child comes to Little Wickets as their own little person. Some run straight in, grabbing a bat, ready to go. Others need a few weeks hiding behind your leg before they feel brave enough to join in — as parents we get it and that’s completely okay. We meet every child exactly where they are, because confidence grows best when children feel safe, understood and encouraged.

That’s where the “Spirit of Cricket “sits at the heart of what we do. For us, it means much more than learning the rules or skills of the game — it’s about fair play, respect, kindness and learning how to be a good teammate. Whether a child is taking their first turn, cheering on a friend, saying “well done” after a great shot, or shaking hands at the end of a game, they’re learning life skills in a way that feels natural, fun and age-appropriate.

More Than Batting and Bowling – Big Kid Skills, Disguised as Fun

A young boy and girl smiling and holding yellow cricket bats during Little Wickets cricket coaching in NottinghamLittle Wickets fun cricket classes for toddlers & kids is about perfect batting or bowling; it’s about those “Big Kid Skills” they’re picking up while they think they’re just playing games and having fun.  At our 1st Innings sessions (for preschool boys & girls), see your child learn patience, teamwork, and how to cheer on their friends. You can join in and help them as much or as little as you feel is necessary. You’ll see them start to listen a little better, wait their turn (mostly!), and gain that bit of confidence that helps them at nursery and at home. Those things might sound small, but as parents we know they really are not.

It’s wonderful to see a shy child finally step forward or a high-energy kid learn how to focus that power into a team game and even better to see parents, over time, step back and watch he magic from the sidelines.

The “2nd Innings”: A Bit of Sanity for the School Years

When the school run starts, life gets… well, hectic. The 2nd InningsReception and Year 2 children participating in a Little Wickets cricket classes for toddlers & kids 2nd Innings session in Reading, helping with the transition into school life. (for Reception to Year 2) is designed for those “big school” kids who still need to run off some steam.

Starting school is a massive gear shift for the whole family. Keeping a familiar routine like Little Wickets can be a real “anchor” during that transition. When everything else is brand new and a bit exhausting, having that same fun, friendly space to come back to every week is a huge comfort for the kids (and, let’s be honest, a bit of much-needed normality for us parents, too).

In these sessions, we build on teamwork, fair play and confidence — the real-life skills children carry with them far beyond Little Wickets and straight back into the playground. For parents, it’s a really special stage to watch: seeing your child grow in independence, make friends, take turns, encourage others and start to find their own little place in a team. It’s one of those lovely reminders that they’re not just learning cricket — they’re growing into capable, kind and confident young people.

What started in Nottingham has grown into a much-loved community across the East Midlands and now into Berkshire, including Reading and Bracknell. We’re incredibly proud of the families, friendships and young Little Wicketers we’ve seen grow along the way.

Rachel Byng in Nottingham summed it up beautifully when she said: “Little Wickets teaches not only cricket and ball skills, but team spirit and great sportsmanship.”

Rachel’s son and daughter have both been regular term-time and Holiday Camp Little Wicketers, and we’ve loved watching them go from strength to strength. It has been especially lovely to see her daughter take those same skills — confidence, teamwork and sportsmanship — into her local cricket club.
